Gazelle at Longmoor Camp
Gazelle has been claimed to be the smallest standard gauge steam locomotive ever built. Originally built in 1893 as a 2-2-2WT (well tank), it was converted to 0-4-2WT in 1911 by Colonel Stephens for use on the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway. The S&MR was taken over by the War Department in 1941 but abandoned a few years later. Gazelle was transferred to Longmoor and displayed outside the camp. See http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/24/Gazelle.htm. After closure of the Longmoor Military Railway, Gazelle was transferred to the National Railway Museum. See Image Gazelle is currently at the Colonel Stephens Railway Museum at Tenterden. See http://www.hfstephens-museum.org.uk/.

Longmoor Military Railway
WD 118 Brussels is an 0-6-0ST built by Hudswell Clarke to a Hunslet design in 1945, and used on the LMR until its closure in 1969. It is now (2021) preserved and stored on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway - see - Image In common with some other LMR locos, it is an oil burner. 391 of these locos were built for the War Department, 75 of which were bought by the LNER after the war, becoming BR class J94. Others were used on industrial sites. At least 70 remain, which must make them the most numerous steam loco class in Britain. See Image for a colour view of classmate 196.
