Limnerslease: artwork
In 1889 George and Mary Watts commissioned Sir Ernest George to build a studio-home in the Surrey Hills. He designed it in the Arts & Crafts style. Limnerslease (combining the Old English words ‘limner’, meaning artist, with ‘leasen’, meaning to glean) was soon hosting celebrities and villagers alike. While George was creating his masterpieces, Mary hosted clay modelling classes for the local community. In time it became their main residence.
Following George's death in 1904, Mary became the keeper of her husband's legacy in the form of Watts Gallery and The Annals, his biography. She died in 1938.
