Furze Hill, Pirbright
Furze Hill was the home, for the last few years of his life, of Sir Henry Morton Stanley (see SU9455). It is a somewhat gloomy Edwardian house, built in 1900, surrounded by a 70-acre estate most of which is marked out by cast iron railings rather than the usual fences or walls. Many of the features of the estate have been given names associated with his travels in Africa – Mazamboni Farm, Ruwenzori Hill, Manyuema, and the Congo Stream. The road in which the house stands is now known as Stanley Hill.
