B2215 passes The Jovial Sailor
What else would you expect on the old Portsmouth Road. Except that jovial is not the same as jolly and most pubs are Jolly Sailors. Jolly is either a clinker built boat, or from the same root as the old French 'joli' meaning pretty. So we'll plump for the boat. Whereas jovial is from the Latin root 'jovialis' meaning of Jupiter; hence friendly and cheerful. Moral be careful if you meddle with toponymy.

The pub's name plainly reflects its location, by what must once - in the 18th and 19th centuries - have been one of the busiest highways in the land.
