The Woking Martian
Erected in 1998 to mark the centenary of the publication of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds", this sculpture depicts one of the gleaming tripods in which Wells' Martians travel about the British landscape after landing on Horsell Common just north of Woking town centre. As the nearby plaque Image explains, Woking can as a result be seen as the birthplace of modern science fiction.

War of the Worlds
When H.G. Wells wrote 'The War of the Worlds' he sited the first landing of the Martians at Horsell Common, just outside of Woking. This statue, by Michael Condron, of one of the Martian Tripods, erected in 1988, celebrates the 100 year centenary of the book. Refer to picture Image for details relating to the plaque beneath the statue.
