Chobham Road Bridge, Basingstoke Canal
The towpath changes sides here, and instead of the simple arrangement with a towpath under the bridge that allows horses and others to cross without crossing the road, the even simpler one without a towpath under the bridge has been used. So all have to cross a busy road to continue on the towpath. It is interesting to compare this view with the state in 1980 - Image . Apart from the canal having been restored from dereliction, the bridge has been widened on this side, without alteration of the original abutments. For a 1901 view of this road crossing, with a bridge now completely replaced, see http://www.francisfrith.com/woking/photos/chobham-road-bridge-1901_46343/
