Moreton-in-Marsh: Mann Memorial Hall
The building, which is on the A44 Oxford Street, is Grade II Listed, and, according to the English Heritage website, it was built in 1891 "for Edith Spear Mann in memory of her husband". In fact Edith Spear Mann (1858-1902) was a daughter of the surgeon and physician John Mann, MRCS (1802-1885) who was born in Moreton-in-Marsh, and operated a surgery in Aldersgate Street, London, for many years from 1829.
The English Heritage website goes on to describe the building thus:-
"Rock faced stone with half-timbered gable end. Two storeys. Elaborate half-timbering with oriel window bargeboards and finial to gable. Three pedimented dormers on north side, one flat topped on south side. Tall lantern with corniced roof on ridge. Stone stacks. Tudor style detailing including a quotation from Ruskin 'Every noble life leaves the fibre of it interwoven for ever in the Work of the World'."
There is also a stone tablet set in the building stating that this was the birthplace of John Mann.
