Letting off steam at Winchcombe railway station
Former British Railways steam locomotive 7820 Dinmore Manor is at the front of a train on platform 1 at Winchcombe railway station on the heritage Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. 7820 Dinmore Manor was built by British Railways at Swindon in 1950. She is a member of the Manor class of light mixed traffic steam locomotives introduced in 1938 by C.B.Collett, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Western Railway. The Manors were a lightweight version of the earlier Grange class. Their lighter weight enabled them to be used on some routes on which heavier locomotives were not allowed. The Manors have a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement. Their working weight is 69 tons, plus 40 tons for the tender, which has a 3,500 gallons water capacity. Of the thirty Manors built, nine are preserved. Dinmore Manor was first based at Oswestry, later working from Plymouth. She was based in Cardiff when withdrawn from service in 1965 towards the end of steam-hauled services on the UK national network. Rescued from Dai Woodham's Barry Scrapyard in 1979 by the Gwili Railway, she is now owned by Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd.
