Reminder of a former Burton's shop, King Street, Stroud
The stone outside Burton Chambers shows THIS STONE LAID BY AUSTIN STEPHEN BURTON 1939.
The Stroud Town website records that Burton’s founder, Montague Burton (1885-1952) was born Meshe David Osinsky. He emigrated to England from Lithuania in 1900 to escape pogroms. Starting work as a pedlar, he went on to set up a business making and selling affordable tailor-made clothing. By 1939 he was running a huge and highly successful business with 595 branches in the UK.
