This war memorial has been placed within the church grounds, by the corner of All Saints Road, and All Saints Villas Road. It is not Cheltenham's main War Memorial, which is to be found in the Promenade, in the town centre. The memorial at All Saints Church, is in respect of those connected with the church who died in the Great (First World) War of 1914-18. There are 103 names recorded, but due to weathering, many names are illegible. Fortunately the Church has a parchment Roll of Honour, on which all the names are recorded. The War Memorial, which dates from around 1920, is Grade II listed. Part of the listing text says:- "The memorial is in the form of a Calvary scene, with Christ on the cross flanked by figures of Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary and set on a tall plinth inscribed with the names of the fallen. The Lamb of God is carved on the rear face of the cross-head". Image

According to the very useful site, Cheltenham4you, this church "was established in 1868 by a group of local people anxious to establish a style of worship not generally found in Cheltenham, using the rich liturgy and colour of the 19th century Oxford Movement. The building was designed by Cheltenham's foremost church architect John Middleton, who designed numerous other Cheltenham churches, such as St. Mark's Church, Holy Apostles Church and St. Philip's and St. James' Church. The church was built in the Early French Gothic style. The original design with a 200 feet tall spire has remained unfinished, but no other Cheltenham church can boast such a delicate interior as All Saints'. Polished granite arcade, elaborate carving, statuary in canopied niches, ironwork screen and font cover make this church's interior breathtaking. All Saints' Church is also famous for its organ. Gustav Holst's father Adolph was an organist there and young Holst sang in the choir. The stained glass in the church was designed by Birmingham born Edward Coley Burne-Jones, who is closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite art". http://www.cheltenham4u.co.uk/index.asp Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was a composer of classical music, who was born in Cheltenham. This mid-Victorian church has followed the Anglo-Catholic tradition throughout its history.On its website it prominently displays a statement that it is a "Resolutions A & B parish". In essence this means the congregation do not accept the ordination of women. A link to more photos:- Image

The information board has a couple of interesting references to the composer Gustav Holst, and his father, both of whom were associated with the church. The photograph on the board also gives some idea of the richness of the interior decoration, and the use of vivid colour, which is unusual in an Anglican church, even one which follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition, as this one does.
