Grave, The Parish Church of St Laurence, Stroud
The rather unusual grave stands in the churchyard west of the church. It is possible that the inhabitant lies above ground.

Not the last duellist - Stroud, Gloucestershire
In a corner of the churchyard to the south-west of St Laurence's Parish Church, Stroud, on the Stroud History Trail, this is the last resting place of Lieutenant Joseph Francis Delmont, who in 1807 at the age of 21 was killed in a duel with Lieutenant Benjamin Heazle. The inscription reads 'Here lie the remains of Joseph Francis Delmont Lieutenant His Majesty's 82nd Regt Born 25th Nov 1785 Died 18th Aug 1807'. The two officers were in Stroud for a recruiting drive for the then war with France. The information on what led to the duel is now lost to us but it was fought in a field off Folly Lane, Stroud. Heazle and Lieutenant Sargeaunt, who had acted as second, fled after the event and Delmont died later of his wounds. The belief that this was the last duel fought in Britain is demonstrably incorrect as there were others later - the last known being between two Frenchmen, Emanuel Barthelemy and Frederic Cournet, near Englefield Green, Surrey on the 19th October 1852. Time taken 2.22 pm BST (British Summer Time).

Tall slim spire, Church of St Laurence, Stroud
Viewed from a path from Lansdown. The tower and spire
are the only 14th century parts of the church to survive the rebuild of 1866-1868.
