Stroud Subscription Rooms
Another picture of Image The architect of this 1833 building (paid for by public subscription) was Charles Baker from nearby Painswick. Some grand classical features, such as the impressive porte cochere with its Tuscan columns and balustrade (you wouldn't want to get wet arriving by coach for a ball), are softened by the subtle creamy colour of the stone. Nicely confident lettering too.

Grade II listed Stroud Subscription Rooms
A need developed in the early 19th century for the increasing population of Stroud to have somewhere to meet, and for leisure activities and entertainment. Thus on March 9th 1833, the foundation stone for the Subscription Rooms was laid. The build was publicly funded, by the sale of shares. It first opened to the public on October 27th 1834. For the rest of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century it remained an important leisure and entertainment location for Stroud. Many older residents remember its Saturday night dances. In 1960, Stroud Urban District Council took over the Subscription Rooms. In the late 1980s the building became the home of the District's Tourist Information Centre. In 1998, the Subscription Rooms closed for 2 years to undergo a major refurbishment to bring its facilities up to date. The building was Grade II listed in May 1951.
