Cheltenham houses [100]
Numbers 16 and 18 St George's Place are the remaining two houses of an original terrace of four. Built in 1789 they are the oldest terrace houses in Cheltenham. Constructed of stuccoed brick with some fine detailing of the stucco, all under a slate mansard roof. Cheltenham is located at the foot of the Cotswold scarp with the small River Chelt flowing through the town. After the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 Cheltenham became a spa town and many Regency houses and other buildings were erected. The town is home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, four days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at the nearby racecourse.

The house with the pale blue front was the home of Emily Bowers (nee Webb), mother of Henry Robertson Bowers of Captain Scott's ill-fated South Pole expedition. She was born in Cheltenham, baptised at St Mary's church. She became a missionary teacher.
