This terrace of 15 houses, odd numbers 29 to 57 St George's Road, includes The George Hotel which occupies numbers 41 to 49. Some are used as offices and some have been converted into flats. Built circa 1838 with later alterations, in stuccoed brick with some detailing, slate roofs and iron railings and balconies. Much original joinery, plasterwork and fireplaces remain. After the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 Cheltenham became a spa town and many Regency houses and other buildings were erected. The town is home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, four days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at the nearby racecourse.

Viewed from St George's Place. In many parts of Cheltenham the Chelt is underground. Despite being largely unseen, the river is a flood threat. In the summer of 2007, many areas of the town were seriously flooded.
