Cheltenham is located at the foot of the Cotswold scarp with the small River Chelt flowing through the town. After the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 Cheltenham became a spa town and many Regency houses and other buildings were erected. The town is home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, four days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at the nearby racecourse.

Queen's Hotel
Looking across Imperial Gardens, and the site of the former Winter Gardens, towards what is probably Cheltenham's best known hotels. It was to have been the King's Hotel when it was being planned but by the time it was opened Queen Victoria had been crowned and the name was changed.

The Queen's Hotel, Cheltenham
The Queen's Hotel is one of Cheltenham's premier hotels and stands at the southern end of the Promenade. The building was built in 1837-8 and David Verey in the Pevsner architectural guide suggests its design resembles certain Neoclassical Russian buildings in St Petersburg.

Cheltenham houses [45]
On the south side of Imperial Square is this terrace of 13 Regency style houses numbers 35 to 47. Built in the early/mid 19th century.
The lamp standard seen here is one of a pair which flank the stable entrance to the Queens Hotel. Erected circa 1838 and converted to lectricity. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1104375
