Bristol Road, Gloucester
To the left is the old Moreland's match factory, where England's Glory matches were made up until the mid - 1970s. Further along, the road is an odd mix of residential and industrial use, including the haulage yard where I spend most of my nights.

Old mill chimney, Gloucester
Nowadays this yard is home to a huddle of small industrial units, one of which employs me to supply biscuits and coffee to a small team of fork lift drivers during the night shift. Well, I'm supposed to be their manager, but I think I'm more usefully employed operating the espresso maker. Anyway, this chimney and adjoining building is no longer used for anything. There are persistent rumours that this entire estate will be sold and developed for housing, so I thought I'd get some pictures after work one morning, before it all changes.

Striking Bikes at the Match Factory
Morelands made "Englands Glory" matches here until the 1970s.
The large factory is now separate business units with this punningly named cycle shop in one corner.
Just the place to alight from your bike.

Moreland's Trading Estate
This is the former England's Glory Moreland's Match Factory on Bristol Road in Gloucester. The building was founded in 1868 and largely rebuilt by E A Pryer in 1911-12. The building is now a trading estate. As a child I can remember passing this building at night in a car with the sign illuminated.
As a footnote to this, at Christmas time 2012 I bought a box of England's Glory matches and was amused by the words 'Made in Sweden' on the lower part of the logo on the front of the box. The words are as large as the brand name above it. Is this symbolic of Britain's manufacturing decline!
