The bridge carries Bristol Road over what used to be a railway line, long since dismantled.

Bristol Road bridge
This old bridge on the Bristol Road approaching Gloucester is one of the few remaining visible signs of the old goods line from Tuffley Junction to Llanthony and Gloucester Docks.

Timber yards, Bristol Road
This length of the Bristol Road is lined with timber yards. On the other side of these yards is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal by which they originally received their supplies. Although several of the yards have disappeared over the years several still survive although sadly now only making use of road transport.
