Passage House, formerly the Bear Inn, Newnham-on-Severn
Located on the corner of Severn Street (formerly named Passage Lane) and Church Road. The Bear Inn was for many years an important part of Newnham's history. It was a coaching inn used by people crossing the River Severn by ferry. It was one of the five inns recorded in 1637. From 1759 the borough and manor court of Newnham was held here. When up for sale in 1837 it came with a fishery and the ferry. From 1856 it was also the home of the Petty Sessions.

Passage House, Church Road, Newnham on Severn
Passage House was once the Bear Inn, standing on the corner of Church Road, and Passage Lane to the right. Passage Lane referred to the route down to the old ferry across the River Severn, but the 'lane' is now called Severn Street. There is a mostly hidden Ordnance Survey bench mark on the corner of the building by the no-entry sign: Image

The street drops quite steeply down towards the river and is lined with colourful cottages. The Severn is at low tide at this point and the Cotswold Ridge can be seen in the distance.
