Railway at Berkeley Road

Berkeley Road Station, with train
View NE, towards Gloucester, Cheltenham, Birmingham etc.; ex-Midland main line Derby etc. and Birmingham (New St.) - Bristol Temple Meads). Great Western trains from Birmingham via Stratford-on-Avon and Cheltenham also ran over this Midland route under running-powers between Standish Junction and Yate South Junction. On the left the Severn & Wye (Great Western & Midland Joint) line from Lydney via the Severn Bridge and Sharpness joined here (seen on the left); there was also a loop from the south onto this branch, used when trains were diverted on Sundays over the Severn Bridge when the Severn Tunnel underwent repairs. The Down train is a Gloucester - Bristol Temple Meads stopping train, headed by Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 45280.

Lydney branch train at Berkeley Road station
View NE, towards the junction with the Birmingham - Bristol main line: ex-GW & Midland (Severn & Wye) Joint line. The auto-train has been propelled from Lydney (Town) over the Severn Bridge by motor-fitted '2021' class 0-6-0PT No. 2080 (built 9/1900, withdrawn 3/52). For closure dates, see Image

View southward, towards Bristol; ex-Midland Derby - Birmingham - Bristol main line, junction of branch to Sharpness and Lydney - see Image The Up express (08.50 Paignton - Leeds) was headed by LMS 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45694 'Bellerophon'.

Berkeley Road Station
View SW, towards Bristol, also Sharpness and Lydney to right; Birmingham - Bristol Main line, junction of Severn & Wye Joint line via Sharpness and Severn Bridge to Lydney. This station was closed to passengers 4/1/65, following cessation of service on S&WJ line, which in turn had been curtailed at Sharpness after destruction of the Severn Bridge on 26/10/60. Berkeley Road remained open for goods until 1/11/66 and the main line remains of course open and flourishing.
