Maverdine Lane in Gloucester
In medieval times this was a public right-of-way off Westgate Street leading to a lane adjoining St Peter's Abbey. The scaffolding is protecting a magnificent C16th century timber framed building on the right of the lane.

Maverdine Lane
Maverdine Lane is a former medieval right-of-way linking Westgate Street with a lane adjacent to the precinct wall of St Peter's Abbey (today's cathedral). This lane or alley passes directly below the jetties of a fine timber-framed 16th century merchant's house Image

The Old Judge's House
It's almost impossible to get a good view of this magnificent building. It stands in Maverdine Passage which is only a few feet wide. As the facade is jettied most of it is directly overhead.

Maverdine Passage
On the right is The Old Judge's House which has one of the best facades in Gloucester but which it is almost impossible to see because of the narrowness of the passage.

Merchant's House on Westgate Street
This is probably one of the finest buildings in Gloucester, unfortunately this magnificent jettied timber front is hidden from view in Maverdine Lane a very narrow medieval right of way off Westgate Street.

Former offices of The Citizen, Gloucester
"The Citizen began life on April 9 1722 as the Gloucester Journal, making it the second oldest continuously published newspaper in the world." http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/localnewspaperweek/Serving-hundreds-yearsarticle-980534-details/article.html . "The Citizen first appeared on the streets of Gloucester on May 1, 1876 - a four-page newspaper costing one half-penny ... The first edition was printed in St John's Hall on the site of the present Marks & Spencer's. Later, an old beer house with a brewhouse was acquired on the other side of the lane and the two premises were linked by a foot-bridge" http://www.livinggloucester.co.uk/made/newspapers/the_citizen/ In 1988 the printing "transferred to a new plant at Staverton Technology Park". "The Citizen moved to the Oxebode in 2006". But the building still carries the words "Journals and Citizen Office".
