9 Southgate Street
Built in 1664-5 (despite a date of 1650 carved into a first floor fireplace) for Thomas Yate, an apothecary. In the late 18th Century it was owned by James Lee, a tobacconist and bluemaker (i.e. maker of blue dye for whitening clothes) who painted the façade blue to advertise his trade. Other subsequent occupants were James Taylor, a grocer and brandy merchant, in the 19th Century and a Mar Clark, tea merchant, around the turn of the 19th/20th Century. It is perhaps fitting therefore that the building is currently occupied by the coffee chain Costa. Grade I listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1271748.
