Grade I listed The New Inn, Gloucester
The inn on Northgate Street was originally a large hostelry built in the 15th century for the former Benedictine Abbey of St Peter by John Twyning, one of the abbey's monks, on the site of an earlier inn. The building is the most complete surviving example of a medieval courtyard inn with galleries.
The claim that the inn was built to provide lodgings for pilgrims to the tomb of King Edward II appears to be an 18th century fabrication.
