Lieutenant John Renwick Haig Haddow was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1942, while serving in submarine H.M.S. Unbroken in the Mediterranean. He continued to serve in other submarines for the rest of the war. In 1946, he was at HMS Mercury, the signal school near Petersfield. Sadly he died during a flying exercise when the plane crashed. Fungi X2
The brackets are either Coriolus versicolor or Bjerkandera adusta - difficult to tell without a closer look at the specimen. The toadstools are probably a species of inkcap - Coprinus - C. micaceus is common on stumps and buried wood.
Thanks to M J Richardson for fungi info.
