Twechar Bridge
The reopening of the Forth & Clyde canal required a major replacement of the original single-leaf bascule bridge (the bridge buttresses have been retained to show the original road alignment). A completely new structure was opened in January 2001, a new control building was rebuilt and the area around the bridge site landscaped.

In the background is the lifting bridge carrying Main Street over the Forth and Clyde Canal. The bridge was built in 1960 and replaced the original bascule Bridge a few metres to the south. The original supports for the bascule bridge are still evident.
