West Street subway station in 1966
An incredible difference from Image which shows the same station in its modern guise. In 1966 the original 1896 stock was still in service; although the condition of the visible paintwork is commendably smart, it was always said that the side next to the wall was never repainted, as no-one ever saw it. All the stations had a central (island) platform so it was always the same side of the train the passengers saw. The diminutive size of the train is readily apparent from the size of the driver in his cab. The quality of lighting on the station was very poor in comparison so that the only chance of a picture was to use flash - bulbs in those days of course, and expensive on top of the meagre allowance of film which a student could afford.
