Abbotsford School
Abbotsford Public School opened in 1879. It was one of several Italianate designed schools by Hugh and David Barclay in the Glasgow area. It was the first school to be built with an open central hall with classes round it and an upper floor of rooms opening from a balcony. The school had a long tradition of choirs: one of its former pupils was Sir Hugh Roberton, founder and conductor of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. On the Devon Street frontage the carved heads above the door represent John Knox and David Livingstone.
