Traditional pawnbrokers sign.
This sign hangs in the People's Palace. In days gone by when few people could read, shops had signs to tell customers what they did. The pawnbrokers sign was three balls, either blue or gold. This sign originated from that used by the Italian Medici family,who rose from humble beginnings to become bankers and rulers of Florence. Nowadays, all respectable pawnbrokers follow strict guidelines, as opposed to loan sharks who operate outside the law.
I haven't seen so many pawnbrokers in years as I saw on my recent visit to Glasgow. One was asking for people to pawn their houses, which seemed a little extreme.
