A unicorn approaching Union Street
"Yes" campaigners parading an unchained unicorn through the city centre. A free unicorn is regarded as a very dangerous beast and therefore heraldic unicorns are always shown chained. Some believe the chain to depict English control over Scotland within the United Kingdom, which is nonsense since chained unicorns featured in the Scottish Royal Coat of Arms long before the formation of the UK. The Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland, used prior to 1603 by the Kings of Scotland, was supported by two chained unicorns and the current royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom is supported by a chained Scottish unicorn and an English Lion.
