Guess the politician...
This is the back of a statue close to the steps of the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow that commemorates Scotland's first First Minister, Donald Dewar, who died of a brain haemorrhage only a year into office. Back when SNP dominance of Scottish politics was only a twinkling in Alex Salmond's eye, Labour held sway up here. The orchestrator of Scottish devolution, UK Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, unveiled the statue in 2002. According to the BBC it depicts Dewar's 'characteristic stoop and crumpled suit'. The statue's plinth was increased in height a couple of years after, to cut out drunken tomfoolery, and no doubt to avoid a traffic cone being balanced upon his head. Donald Dewar was one of two Scottish Labour politicians to die in important positions around the same time. The other was John Smith, who preceded Tony Blair as UK Labour Party leader. Both are talked about almost reverentially by other politicians today; I often wonder whether this would be the case had they lived to see out their roles. As the old adage goes: all political careers are destined to end in failure. To which could maybe be added: or death.
