Blackpool & Fleetwood tram 40 in Lord Street
Until the opening of modern tramways in the UK in Manchester, Sheffield and elsewhere, Fleetwood was the last town with a long stretch of traditional street running tramway track. The tram here is a "Fleetwood Box Car" dating from 1914. It is travelling at a snail's pace along Lord Street, the town's main shopping street, because there are crowds of people walking in the street, as it is the annual Fleetwood Transport Festival (otherwise known as Tram Sunday). This particular tram is well travelled. It is often seen on the Blackpool to Fleetwood tramway, but it has also spent some years on the Heaton Park Tramway in Manchester, as well as at the National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire. Despite the board on the tram's roof celebrating the centenary of the Blackpool & Fleetwood tramway in 1998, this was a bit premature as this photograph was quite definitely taken in 1997!
