The churchyard at St Chad's was closed for burials in 1833. In 1973 most of the graveyard was levelled and many of the stones set into the ground as paving slabs. Just a small number of table tombs and memorials were left. The memorial on the right is to John Bowman who was the first secretary to the Fylde Temperance Union who died April 6th 1867, aged 25 years. The table tomb on the left, in memory of William Ellet, is festooned with fallen chestnuts. In the background is the door into the Clergy Vestry. The paths on the left lead down to the Market Place.

The earliest documented evidence of a church here dates from 1094 although it is likely that there was a much older church (possibly as early as the seventh century) on the site. The tower dates from the 17th century, and much of the remainder of the building from a major renovation in the 18th century, although some of the fabric of the original structure remains (Image]). St Chad's is a Grade II* listed building.

The East end of the church was extended by the building of an apse in 1868. The altar was given 1912 and the reredos, panelling and sanctuary windows were all installed in the 1930s. The two windows on the south side depict the archangel Gabriel with a lily and the archangel Raphael with a fish and shepherd's staff. The two matching windows on the north side show the archangel Uriel holding a flame and the archangel Michael with a shield and spear. The carved oak reredos shows, from left to right, the Annunciation, St Chad, the Supper at Emmaus, St Hilda and the Resurrection. In the sanctuary is a bishop's travelling chair and other chairs of the Victorian and Queen Anne periods. The elegant bass chandelier is inscribed with the date 1710 and the name of the maker, Samuel Smith, in the "little old Bayley, London". The brass lectern dates from 1948.
