Mortuary Chapel in Layton Cemetery
Layton Cemetery is Blackpool’s Victorian cemetery. It was opened in 1873, covers an area of 22.2 acres and has approximately 17300 graves. It is surrounded by Talbot Road on the south side and Mansfield Road on the north and part of the west side. The cemetery is split into 3 main areas, the Church of England graves run through the middle, with the Catholic graves running down the right hand side and the non-conformist on the left side as you stand at the main gate on Talbot Road. There is a separate Muslim section on the far left side, and situated a short distance along Westcliffe Drive is the Jewish section. This view is what you see as you enter the cemetery from Talbot Road. The building in front is the last survivor of the three chapels which originally stood in the cemetery. This is the Grade II-listed Church of England Chapel (Historic England List Entry Number: 1376194 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1376194 ). Unfortunately, it is not currently in use and requires much work to bring it into a usable state.
