Balloon Tram "Walter Luff" on Blackpool Promenade
Blackpool Corporation’s high capacity, double-decker “balloon trams” of the type exemplified by number 717 were a familiar sight on the Blackpool Tramway up until the 2011 system upgrade. Now used to give “heritage tours”, they have been replaced on regular services by the single-decker Bombardier trams. 717 was one of a batch of 14 similar double-deck trams built by the English Electric Company in December 1934. They soon earned the name ‘Luxury Balloons’ due to their well-appointed interiors and distinctive streamlined appearance. Although no longer used in normal passenger service, a selection of Balloon trams have been retained as part of Blackpool Transport’s Heritage fleet. In 2014 717 was named “Walter Luff” after the manager who introduced the streamlined fleet in the early 1930s
