Sculptor Charles d'Orville Pilkington Jackson (1887–1973) Unveiling Date June 24, 1964 Occasion The 650th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn Unveiled By Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh Medium Bronze equestrian statue on a lofty white granite plinth. Design Details The King is depicted on his war horse, holding a battle-axe. This posture often alludes to his famous duel with the English knight Sir Henry de Bohun on the eve of the battle, where Bruce famously clove his opponent's head with an axe. Historical Accuracy Pilkington Jackson was meticulous in his research; the head of the statue was modeled using measurements taken from Robert the Bruce's skull, which was re-discovered in Dunfermline Abbey in 1818. Location It stands in a commanding position in the memorial park at the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre, facing southwards towards the traditional line of the English army's advance. Inscription The plinth bears the inscription: "ROBERT THE BRUCE KING OF SCOTS 1306–1329." The statue was fully restored and returned to its original bronze finish in 2013, in time for the 700th anniversary of the battle in 2014.
