Mercat cross detail, High Street
It's not always easy to date crosses, especially in the case of smaller burghs. Here, however, it helps that the cross displays the arms of the earls of Kincardine. Since we know the earldom was created in 1647, we can be sure that the cross was erected some time after that date. For a general explanation of mercat crosses, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercat_cross

Mercat cross, Kincardine
A mercat cross in a rather sorry state owing to disrepair and the poor positioning of road signs. A van delivery driver on his rounds, happening to spot me photographing it, expressed disgust by saying, "It's a b****y disgrace!" A supermarket assistant told me the fence has been up for years now in this far-flung outpost at the western extremity of Fife. She tells me some of the workers at Longannet Power Station nearby have been collecting money for its restoration, which shows that some people care. Compare this with the cross at Airth only a few miles away but under Falkirk Council Image
