Sir Walter Raleigh - statue
Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552 – 29 October 1618) was born in the house of Hayes Barton (local term for a farm). It is near to the Devon village of East Budleigh, and his parents are buried in All Saints churchyard in the village. This statue close to the church is a reminder of this great explorer, writer, courtier and poet. He was for a long time a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted by her, but was finally beheaded in 1618 after a show trial.
