Weir on Dawlish Water, Dawlish, Devon
Jane Austen spent a holiday here in 1802 and in Sense and Sensibility has one of her characters remark that “it seemed rather surprising that anybody could live in Devonshire without living near Dawlish”.

Up 'Devonian' approaching Dawlish
The well-known preserved Collett-design 4-6-0 No. 7029 'Clun Castle' (built 5/50, withdrawn 11/65 - the Last of the Class and preserved - in 2011 at Tyseley Locomotive Works) is a fine sight here running along the sea-front at Dawlish. This is one of the endless procession of holiday expresses to be seen at this ideal location on Summer Saturdays, which reached their zenith in 1955. The 'Devonian' ran daily (not Sundays) from Paignton (dep. 09.15; on Saturdays, Kingswear 08.45) to Bradford Forster Square (due 19.00), via Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds: on Saturdays the stop at Bristol Temple Meads was missed and the changeover to LMR working was made on the St Philip's Marsh Loop. The train has just emerged from Kennaway Tunnel, the last of five under the headland between Teignmouth and Dawlish - often referred to collectively as 'Parson's Tunnel' after Parson's Rock.

Kingswear - Exeter stopping train emerging from Kennaway Tunnel at Dawlish
View southward, towards Newton Abbot and Plymouth/Penzance/Kingswear: ex-GW South Devon main line. The locomotive is Churchward-design '4500' class No. 4569 (built 10/24, withdrawn 8/64). In this view, some interest is being taken by the people on the sea-front.
