Stone from Meldon Quarry
Stone for railway trackwork was moved from Meldon Quarry, west of Okehampton, and used throughout the former Southern Region of BR. Pictured near Cowley Bridge on the once main line from Exeter to Plymouth and North Cornwall is a loaded stone train for Tonbridge. The railway here is now single track with the passenger service to Barnstaple Junction via Crediton served from Exeter. West of Crediton the private Dartmoor railway terminates at Meldon Quarry. Stone trains from the quarry in 2010 are now infrequent.
