Shops, businesses and houses, Well Street, Exeter
The street leads to the site of one of the wells supplying water to the medieval city. The block on the left is unusual in that the houses are accessed by a pavement above the facades of the shops

Sidwell Street, Exeter
There aren't many differences between this and Image, taken over two years later. But the shop next to the Odeon has changed; Bitsa This ... Bitsa That (no idea what they did) has been replaced by Hair Gem's (sic). Meanwhile the cinema advertised its films in 2006: "Alien Autopsy" and "She's The Man" - rather than its special offer. On the left side of the cinema, the next three or so buildings had been replaced by 2020 by a modern Tesco Express. Further down the street, the cupola of the grade II* listed Methodist church https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1224385?section=official-list-entry is prominent.

Sidwell Methodist church
The Methodists were praying here in Exeter from the 1830s, but it was not until the nineteenth century that the present church was built. A smaller hall and schoolroom were opened in 1896 but it was soon felt that they needed expanding. A tender was put out for such and was eventually awarded to a French engineer, Paul Cottancin, who had patented a system of reinforced brickwork and concrete. With a tempting fee of a mere £9,600 he went ahead to oversee the project. However, he went bankrupt and was unable to finish the roof. The church was opened on May 3rd 1905, albeit with a temporary roof for a while.
