Manchester - Paignton express at Cowley Bridge Junction
View NE, towards Taunton, London, Bristol etc.; ex-GWR West of England main line; also - see the signals - on the other side of the bridge, the ex-L&SWR main lines TO Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth etc. diverged, the 1½ miles of double-track from here to Exeter St David's being a severe bottleneck, especially at holiday times, The corresponding main roads (A396 from Tiverton and A377 from Crediton, joined beside this bridge, contributing along with the A38 over the Exe Bridge at Exeter to incredible traffic jams before the M5 was built for road traffic. This is the 09.10 Manchester (London Road) to Paignton express, headed by 4-6-0 No. 5024 'Carew Castle' (built 4/34, withdrawn 5/62 and allocated for many years at Newton Abbot).
