Down WR holiday express passing Cowley Bridge Junction
View northward, towards Taunton etc. on the ex-GWR West Country main line, where it is joined by the equivalent ex-LSW main line coming from Yeoford and all points westward, north of Exeter St David's. On the celebrated two-track bottleneck between here and St David's the Down GWR trains were bound for the West, opposing the Up SR trains coming from the West. The signalmen in the Junction Box here were never so busy as on a Summer Saturday such as in July 1955 and the long-distance express, the 07.43 Nottingham Midland to Plymouth had only a 2-6-0, Chuchward-design 43XX No. 6358 (built 11/23, withdrawn 10/59) - with the Reporting Number merely chalked on the smokebox.
