Green with lime tree in blossom, Little Silver, Exeter
Little Silver is an alleyway leading to a row of houses fronting onto this square of green. According to David Cornforth the name means 'wood outside the [city] walls', 'Silver' deriving from the Latin 'silva', meaning wood. There are records of houses here in the early 18th century. A central square of cottages stood on the green until 1963, when they were demolished, leaving a grassy square between Little Silver and Russell Terrace, now a haven for wildflowers. http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_streets/littlesilver.php
