Fore Street from Rackclose Lane
A closer view of Image Only red cars are allowed up Fore Street. That's not true. On the far side are interestingly-shaped frontages at the corner with West Street. The line of the city wall runs in between the two; Rackclose Lane is just outside the line (ie the car is on the point of entering the city). Rather than a city gate, the church of All-Hallows-on-the-Walls stood at this point until the late C18.

Businesses and a ghost sign, Fore Street, Exeter
The brickwork on the left has a faint ghost sign; one line appears to be IMPORTERS to match a Victorian trade directory that this was a Cigar merchant and importer

Exeter city walls near West Gate
On the right are houses built on the wall between the site of the West Gate and New Bridge Street, which the building with scaffolding faces on the other side. A veritable patchwork of masonry, some of it doubtless medieval or earlier. This little court, for which I cannot trace a name, gives a flavour of the character of Exeter's former back streets, many now redeveloped.

West Street, Exeter
The rear of these houses can be seen in Image, perched on the city walls. The street climbs to meet Image - compare the red building just visible here.
