Bartholomew Terrace, EXETER, EX4 3BW

Exquisite early C19 houses with canted bays above the city wall and overlooking the Exe, along a path linking Bartholomew Street to the top of Barbican Steps.

Built in 1817, for Baptists seceding from a chapel in South Street, with two pleasant classical facades, this eastern one with pilasters and Doric porch. Interesting detail on the renovated brick building beside it, on Bartholomew Street.

The Stage by Stage Academy of performing arts has been resident here since 1994. However, the building dates back to 1876. See Image] for a look at the foundation stone.

This stone is in what is now an academy for performing arts. The building is next door to a gospel chapel, dated 1817, and is perhaps related. Elisha Smith Robinson founded a very successful paper bag company in Bristol in 1844, and was a staunch Baptist. See Image] for the full view.

One of a few gravestones still visible in the gardens at the back of Bartholomew Street West. The area is now a quiet park with lots of trees. Previously it was the graveyard to All Hallows on the Walls church; however, it was demolished after WWII.

This Regency building is dated 1817 on the cornerstone that can be seen at the bottom left, by the signpost. The inscription reads: THIS STONE WAS LAID SEPTEMBER 30TH. ANNO DOMINI 1817. BY A MINISTER OF JESUS CHRIST WITH THE DESIRE OF RAISING AN EARTHLY TEMPLE IN WHICH MAY BE PROCLAIMED THE GREAT TRUTH CONTAINED IN THE WORD OF HIS MASTER. 1 COR. CH. 3, V.11 OTHER FOUNDATION CAN NO MAN LAY THAN THAT IS LAID WHICH IS JESUS CHRIST The building is Grade II listed: see the listing at the Historic England site https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1104077?section=official-list-entry . It is still in use for worship, by the Westgate Christian Fellowship. The path to the left runs along a surviving stretch of city wall; below it, the ground drops steeply towards the River Exe.

Bartholomew Terrace seems to be the place for lots of wheelies. Mind you, there's a sharp drop over the wall into the car park below - see Image

The marked drop beyond the terrace pavement is largely down to the fact that this was part of the old city walls. Exeter was strongly defended, even from pre-Christian times, but at this point there once used to be the large semi-circular Snayle Tower. Perhaps the modern houses reflect this feature.
