Commemorative stone on Bartholomew Street, Exeter
This tablet, alongside Bartholomew Street, commemorates the consecration of the churchyard (see Image ) behind it. The contrast and darkness have been cranked up to try and make it more readable. The text is as follows: REPOSITORIUM DEI FIDELIUM DORMITORIUM. This platte of grounde was gyven by ye Cyttie of Exon, Fytted and encompassed by the concurrent charge of both the Church and Cyttie, wilh the carefull overseeynge of ROGER MALLACK MARCHANTE, then MAIOR, and was solemnlie consecrated by the REVEREND JOSEPH HALLE, then LORDE BISHOPE of EXON upon SAINTE BARTHOLOMEW'S DAYE. Auguste XXIIII, 1637. PRETIOSA IN CONSPECTU DEI MORS SANCTORUM Spelling-wise, the message seem to be: if in doubt stick an e on the end of it. The bishop is now known as Joseph Hall, an important figure and a leading satirist until his ordination - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Hall_%28English_Bishop_and_satirist%29 . Roger Mallock was a member of a well-known South Devon family who lived at Cockington.

Barbican Steps
The name derives from the old city walls that used to keep Exeter defended, with river-bourne attacks a threat at this point.
