Lane near Wiston
The lane between Wiston and Plymptons Farm, featuring a family of Canada geese. The parents refused to lead their offspring off the road (you can see a convenient ditch on the right), but continued down it at a furious pace, the goslings frantically trying to keep up. At this point, a car appeared behind mine, and I felt obliged to overtake, which there was room to do. However, I was horrified when the two adults took to the air, leaving their offspring stranded in the road. I pulled over by the next farm, and explained the situation to a curious resident. The gosling were now approaching from the rear, and we agreed that their chances of survival were very limited. Apparently, from her experience, Canada geese are indifferent parents, so there was no guarantee that the adults would return for their brood. She retrieved one from the ditch where it had fallen over and I shepherded the other two into a field where their chances of survival were slightly improved; at least they wouldn't get squashed by the next vehicle, though the next fox or raven would make probably short work of them. Anyway, they were rather charming, and one has some hope of growing up among other livestock.
