Montpelier House, Montpelier Terrace, Ilfracombe
Montpelier House, formerly known as TALBOT HOUSE, is an 1828 addition on the eastern end of the Georgian / Regency row known as Montpelier Terrace. There is a stone Coach-house in the rear garden. By 1999, when we bought the property, Montpelier House had been divided into a large 2 double bedroomed ground floor apartment and a 3-storey, 5 bedroomed house above. We sold it in December 2005. The apparent lean is due to my limited skill at photography. Being part of one of Ilfracombe's 3 premier terraces it is seen in many photographs and paintings in publications about the town and Devon. Much of the sea view it had enjoyed towards "The Elephant's Head" (Hillsborough Hill) was lost when a 3-storey house was built in 2004/5 on the corner of Portland Park in place of an old single storey storage building formerly used by Unigate among others. Vehicle access to Montpelier House is via a 5-bar gate on to the narrow Montpelier Lane at the rear. The house, like many in Ilfracombe affords clear views across the Bristol Channel to The Worm's Head rocks off The Gower Peninsula.
