Old Milestone by the A377, Bishop's Tawton
Carved stone post by the A377, in parish of Bishop's Tawton (North Devon District), 50m uphill from Methodist Church, on path by wall, on West side of road. Barum tombstone, erected by the Barnstaple turnpike trust in the 19th century.
Inscription reads:-

Law Memorial Houses
The founder of the Law Memorial Houses at Bishops Tawton was Mary Jane Law. The daughter of a Barnstaple merchant, the wife of a Barnstaple surgeon.

The Meeting Room
The founder of the Law Memorial Houses at Bishops Tawton was Mary Jane Law, In October 1883 she bought the necessary land and in the same month signed the contract with the mason and carpenter for building on it a terrace of six cottages together with a meeting room.
The original inmates were, as Mary Jane intended, her butler and his wife, her coachman and his wife, her cook and her lady’s maid. Mary Jane Law died aged 85 on 20 March 1895
