The staff of the CIA Willeys munitions factory, Exeter c.1943
Posing on the south bank of the River Exe, probably during a lunch break are the ladies of the dept. of the Chief Inspection Armaments at Willeys munitions factory. Amongst them is an army officer, a lieutenant, whose role may have been one of liaison between the civilian hierarchy at the factory, and the military authority. The factory made anti-aircraft shell cases, many destined for Malta. The location is a bit of a guesstimate; it has been assumed from where the former factory was located off Willeys Avenue, and in the photo, the River Exe, and the twin towers of Exeter Cathedral in the distance. I'm grateful to Alan Murray Rust for his observations regarding more accurate location details. Willeys factory was hit during the Exeter Blitz of May 1942 losing its roof, but soon resumed production again under cover of swathes of tarpaulins before repairs were effected. Air raids were fairly commonplace, enemy aircraft would often fly in navigating using the River Exe, the factory a frequent target, was often bombed and machine-gunned with little warning. My mother (extreme left) had survived the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War that followed, only to marry my father and then to find herself in the middle of another conflict, an obvious glutton for punishment.
