In 1992, the Duchess of Kent opened this 12 bed in-patient and daycare unit, built on a corner of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital site, leased at a nominal rent from the health authority.

The hospice in Exeter takes its name from running together the words hospice and care, in a way which includes "Isca", the Roman name for Exeter, and "scare" because some people are scared of the sicknesses that the hospice cares for.
